Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which spans across vast expanses of highland plans, savanna woodland and forests. Established in 1959 as multiple land use area with wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing.

The Ngorongoro crater is also the world's largest inactive caldera. The crater floor covers about 260 square kilometers and is the crater is about 600 meters deep. Due to the collapse of an active volcano over 2 million years ago, the Ngorongoro crater was formed.

Ngorongoro is thought to have formed about 2.5 million years ago from a large active volcano whose cone collapsed inward after a major eruption, leaving the present vast, unbroken caldera as its chief remnant. The caldera's floor is predominantly open grassland. It is a large, unbroken, un-flooded caldera, formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed some three million years ago. The Ngorongoro crater sinks to a depth of 610 metres, with a base area covering 260 square kilometres.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. A part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area, one of three natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites found in Tanzania, the Crater is the remnant of a mighty volcano that collapsed inward upon itself after a mighty eruption between 2 and 3 million years ago.

Ngorongoro crater safari 2022

The Ngorongoro Crater is one beautiful setting and the best place in East Africa to see the big five. Book with Africa Natural Tours 2022 to start your African safari adventure. However, as one of the world's most astonishing and renowned natural wonders, the Ngorongoro Crater does get busy, and at times very busy. Due to the crowds we recommend a two-night stay only here, then moving on to the Serengeti for a quieter, more private safari experience.
